Naturism does have a following in Australia, but I wouldn’t consider it "popular" in the mainstream sense. I think that it has a significant following.
According to the Australian Naturist Federation (ANF), which is the national representative body for naturist clubs and resorts in Australia, there are around 25 naturist venues operating across the country, including beaches, resorts, and clubs. Some of these venues are clothing-optional rather than strictly naturist, which means that visitors can choose whether or not to be nude. The ANF estimates that there are between fifteen and twenty thousand active naturists in Australia.
Australia has a long history of naturism, and there are many official and unofficial nude beaches and resorts across the country. Some of the most popular nude beaches in Australia include Maslin Beach in South Australia, Lady Bay Beach in New South Wales, and Samurai Beach in New South Wales. In addition to these beaches, there are also many naturist clubs and resorts throughout the country that offer clothing-optional accommodation, activities, and events.
The naturist community in Australia is relatively small compared to other countries, and many Australians may not be familiar with or may have misconceptions about naturism.
It's worth noting that attitudes towards nudity and naturism can vary widely in Australia depending on factors like cultural background, age, and location. Some Australians may be more open to the idea of naturism than others, and some parts of the country may be more naturist-friendly than others. In general, however, naturism is not widely practiced or discussed in mainstream Australian culture.
The popularity of naturism in Australia can be attributed to several factors, including the country's warm climate, the natural beauty of its beaches and landscapes, and a generally relaxed and accepting attitude towards nudity.
It is worth noting that while naturism is completely legal in Australia, there are still some social and legal restrictions around public nudity, and it is important to respect local laws and customs when visiting nude beaches and resorts.
Australia is more conservative or shall we say complex about the human body and certainly when it comes to Naturism and Naturists as is evident by the fact that The Australian Naturist is about to disappear from the Newsagent.
Thanks for this. I have always been surprised by the restrictions and limits placed on public nudity in Australia by officials. From across the ditch, here in New Zealand, we often read articles about reactions to nudity in Australia with some disbelief. For a country with as much open space, good weather and skimpy swimwear, I would have imagined Australians to be more comfortable with nudity.
